DRYLAB

BEAT is an off-pump coronary artery bypass (OPCAB) training simulator. By combining it with the vessel model YOUCAN, you may practice off-pump vascular anastomosis with a stabilizer. The vascular anastomosis skill is one of the basic skills in cardiovascular surgery, and it is possible to effectively acquire this skill with repeated DRYLAB training. The development of this simulator began in a Waseda University laboratory in 2004, and since then, 275 of such equipment has routinely been used in 9 countries around the world (as of March, 2016).

BEAT can be used, not only in coronary bypass surgery, but for training in general cardiovascular surgery as well. First-time cases exist for everyone. However, in the future, handling first-time cases in a safe manner with sufficient basic practice in a DRYLAB environment will be a must. Please use BEAT for daily training and practice.

Features

  • POINT
    01
Realistic beat with an innovative actuator "Biometal"

BEAT uses special shape-memory alloy Biometal®. Unlike conventional air drive and motor drive, it reproduces extremely smooth yet quiet beat.Biometal® is a registered trademark of Toki Corporation.

  • POINT
    02
Reproduction of 45 types of beat and various vessel positions

5 levels of heart rate (50, 55, 60, 70, 80 rpm). 3 beat patterns (including vertical and lateral). Beat amplitude may also be adjusted in 3 levels (low, medium, high). The beating actuator part is fixed onto a special flexible joint and various vessel positions may be reproduced with just a touch. For example, in the initial training stage, repeated practices with the LAD setting may be carried out, gradually moving up to a more difficult level such as RCA and Cx.

  • POINT
    03
    Portability enabling "whenever and wherever"

BEAT-S1 may be disassembled and reassembled without any tools. The complete BEAT package fits into the attached carry bag, making it easy to carry anywhere around the world. If you put in your surgical equipment set and sutures, you can practice anastomosis anytime and anywhere. It is possible to engage in vascular anastomosis practice in the medical office, home or academic conference venue regardless of the time and place. You will have the opportunity, not only to practice by yourself, but to directly learn vital tips of vascular anastomosis from skilled surgeons around the world. Where and how to train? Infinite possibilities are available to you depending on your ideas.

  • POINT
    04
    Simple structure without a manual

A little bit of spare time in between your busy clinical duties. If assembling and operation are troublesome, the simulator will soon be gathering dust. BEAT is structured from the perspective of busy surgeons and wasteful procedures have thoroughly been eliminated. You need no more than 5 minutes to assemble and start up BEAT-S1. Just turn on the power switch and push the start button to start it beating.

  • POINT
    05
Special LED lighting developed for anastomosis practice

Lighting mounting on BEAT was developed in collaboration with Toki Corporation, the pioneer of special LED lighting. There are many factors to consider in lighting design, such as color temperature, illuminance, thermal control and durability, etc. The lighting used for BEAT has been equipped with a dedicated control circuit so as not to cause eye strain despite long periods of use.

  • POINT
    06
    Attractive design conducive to display

The designers of BEAT were particular about its design. EBM was seeking a new surgical training form which did not resemble a "typical surgery training" mannequin, but something which one would always like to have close at hand and to show others. We would like you to place it at home within sight of family members so that it may become a tool, contributing to lively communication.

  • POINT
    07
    Usable anywhere in the world

Power supply is 100-240V and uses globally-compatible adapters. If a connector compatible with the target country is used, BEAT may be used anywhere. It will be useful in overseas practical skill presentations and in-house product demonstrations.

Usage scenarios

BEAT will support your skill maintenance and improvement at any stage, such as junior resident training, senior resident training, or training for specialist qualification acquisition. The role of DRYLAB and BEAT is to assist in the repetitive practice of basic training. We recommend the use of BEAT for "that imminent day" so that you may be ready whenever a clinical opportunity comes your way.

In the policlinic practice of 5th year medical students, students are sent by rotation to the surgical department. Not only through surgery observation but also through practical skill education using an actual simulator, awareness toward the "intrigue and depth of surgery" from an early stage may be cultivated. We recommend that you use it in combination with dedicated training sutures.

Verification of surgical training results and quantification of the learning curve are hot research topics worldwide. By using a simulator environment with reproducibility and no individual differences, a new branch of medical research may be opened up, such as the quantification of surgical techniques and the establishment of an effective training method. We have thus far received many inquiries regarding quantitative evaluations of surgical training research and skills from research institutions. Some cases have developed into joint researches.

Simulators may be used "anytime, anywhere" and "by anyone." For example, in Tokyo, surgery experience events are held regularly for the general public and for elementary and junior high school students. In hospitals, particularly through surgery experiences aimed at healthcare professionals such as nurses, smooth communication in the clinical site may be established.

BEAT may be used at exhibitions of in-house products at academic conferences and hands-on seminars, etc. Highly-effective presentations may be given at academic demonstrations and marketing activities for surgical robots, stabilizers, steel equipment and sutures. We have also co-sponsored hands-on seminars of vascular anastomosis techniques upon request from major medical equipment manufacturers.

We have received on-site feedback stating that they would definitely like to use BEAT to enhance image training precision the day before surgery. We have made improvements to BEAT time and again to simplify the design so as not to inhibit the imagination of the surgeons. By using BEAT with repeated surgical images of the surgical procedure the next day, a more realistic anastomosis practice may be achieved. In actuality, by performing anastomosis once or twice before surgery, the accuracy of the procedure will be enhanced.

FAQ

  • QIt is possible to purchase BEAT for personal use?

Yes, it is. Please see the online shop or contact us (03-5737-2884 BEAT section).

  • QCan you train with just YOUCAN?

Yes, YOU CAN. However, by using YOUCAN in combination with BEAT, the "operative field," "positional relationship of blood vessels" and "beating motion," are reproduced, and a more effective and efficient training session is made possible for the same amount of time.

  • QIs it possible to train with a porcine heart?

No. BEAT is precisely designed specifically for YOUCAN. In addition, the tissue fluid and blood may contaminate the inside of the actuator, which may cause malfunction. Please do not mount anything thing other than YOUCAN. Any such damages will not be covered by warranty.

  • QHow long is the warranty period? How is the durability?

The warranty period is 2 years. Regarding durability, if used under normal conditions, users have commented that it functions without any trouble even after 7 years. The actuator cable and the YOUCAN mounting area of the actuator are delicately designed, so please exercise caution so as not to damage them.

  • QCan repairs be made in the event of a malfunction?

    Yes, they can.

  • QIf taken overseas, what happens to the support service?

If a malfunction occurs, please send the pertinent part by EMS, etc. We will repair it or send a replacement part, etc.

  • QI would like to purchase it through a distributor we have dealings with. Is it possible?

It is possible. For cost reduction purposes, direct sales are recommended. However, voucher transaction is possible if you have a designated distributor. Please inform your distributor about us.

  • QHow long does delivery take?

Since we have the goods in stock, they may be delivered at the earliest on the next business day.
